Hi, I’m Ian Dearman. I help small businesses and arts & cultural organisations tell their stories through thoughtful video, photography and digital content.

Scruffy Whippet Media is my freelance creative identity, bringing together my experience across film, photography and immersive digital work. Based in Nottingham, I work on a wide range of projects — from promotional videos and marketing content to events, exhibitions and live performances.

I work with small businesses looking for authentic, high-quality content for their websites, marketing and social channels, as well as arts organisations, museums and theatres developing creative, engaging digital work. As a hybrid shooter, I work fluidly across both video and photography, making it easier to deliver cohesive, consistent content without over-complicating the process.

Alongside my client work, I’m also a digital artist in my own right, with a Master’s degree in Fine Art. This practice-led background strongly informs how I work — particularly when collaborating with artists, curators and cultural organisations — bringing a deeper understanding of creative process, experimentation and audience experience.

Video Production

I have been creating videos for over 15 years and so you can rest assured I have the experience to help produce your video’s and deliver your message. I specialise in corporate video production and work with a wide range of clients.

Alongside my freelance practice, I’m currently a Digital Culture Development Officer on an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation project, working with Mansfield District Council, Mansfield Museum and Mansfield Palace Theatre.

Over the last three years, I’ve spent much of my time developing digital and immersive exhibitions, working closely with artists, universities and local community groups to create accessible, engaging cultural experiences — both online and in physical spaces.

My work includes video for websites, marketing and campaigns, event and exhibition documentation, arts and heritage films, photography of people, places and projects, and aerial video and photography. Whatever the brief, the focus is always on clear storytelling, strong visuals and content that feels right for its audience.

I like to keep the process simple and collaborative — no jargon, no stress — just clear communication and a shared focus on making something meaningful and effective.
